Sixth Grade Collagraphs

Collagraphs are a form of printmaking and consists of assembling different materials together.  The students had a variety of items to choose from for this project.  The overall theme was, "Winter."  I loved how these turned out.  The students also wrote a project reflection and I realized that a lot of the kids did not like how the print turned out different from the original collagraph.  Printmaking is tricky and does not show all of the details.  Overall, I believe they enjoyed the process.

Abstract Line Sculptures

Third grade learned about the art element, line.  We used straws covered with tissue paper to create a unique line sculpture.  Nice work third grade!!

Art Nouveau Mirrors

For this project we took a look at the art style, Art Nouveau.   Art Nouveau involved swirling lines, mythical creatures, and gold details.  The students created their own design and added gold touches with metallic paper.  They turned out amazing!  Great job fourth grade!

3D Projects

We finished these projects in December, but I never got the chance to post them!  The kids always amaze me with their work.  The airplane was a project a student came up with and the gingerbread houses were made from old shoe boxes!!

Moroccan Tile Project

What a cool project!!!  One of our fifth grade students has family from Morocco and her mom lend us some neat artifacts for us to look at.  We learned that Morocco architect has beautiful tile work and so each student created their very own, unique design.  We discussed symmetry and color--the students did an amazing job!!!

Art Around the World Update

I am so excited about the projects that the students have been working on!

Fifth grade is working on tiles inspired from Morocco and they are so beautiful!

Sixth grade is working on winter collagraphs (a form of printmaking) and they learned that this style is popular in Europe and America.  The students are using different textures to come up with a scene of their choice.  So far, they look amazing.

Lastly, second grade is learning about the artist, Ted Harrison, who is from Canada.  Harrison uses bright colors to paint Yukon scenes.  I cannot wait to see the finished results!

Juniper the Elf is Back!!!!!!

Winter Trees

Trees have to be my favorite subject to paint and draw.  I love the way these trees turned out!

Star Student: Samantha Stritzinger

Samantha Stritzinger is a fourth grader with amazing talent!  She is always showing me sketches and paintings.  I had to make her our star student!  Way to go Sam and keep up the art work!!!

Toy Airplanes!

When a student has a really cool idea that they are excited about, I will usually do it as a class project.  I love these toy planes!

Beautiful Work Sixth Grade!!!

Sixth grade learned about shadows and highlights these last few weeks.  We talked about how different values create form (elements of art) and gives an object a realistic appearance.  I love how these turned out!

I love fall and all the beautiful leaves!  Sixth grade made these incredible leaf prints by using gelatin molds given to us by the high school Science teacher!  Thank you Mrs.  Breitigan!

PAEA Conference

I was honored to present with my former professors at the PAEA (Pennsylvania Art Education Association) annual conference at Seven Springs this past weekend.  We discussed how art is "natural" and how to incorporate the AEC (Arts Education Collaborative) framework into curriculum, common core, and lessons.

Fall leaves (Third Grade) and Tree Weavings (Sixth Grade)

I love this bulletin board!  Third grade used modeling paste to create beautiful, textured leaves.  Sixth grade learned how to weave and used yarn to create a fall scene.

Egyptian Self Portraits (Fifth Grade)

I love this lesson because we learned so much!  First, we discussed that Egypt is a country in Africa.  We learned about Pharaoh headwear, hieroglyphics, and how to write our name Egyptian style!  The students learned the proportions of the face and used construction paper to create their headdress.  These turned out incredible and I am so proud of the student's work!  Nice job fifth grade!

Fourth Grade learned about African masks and why they are important to many cultures throughout the world.  Some African tribes use masks to tell stories, for celebrations and ceremonies, to honor their people, and when going to war.  Since it is also close to Halloween, I gave the students the option to do a spooky mask if they wanted to.

Getting Ready for Open House!!!!

Ernesto Neto is a Brazilian artist that used organic shapes to create installations and sculptures.  The kids looked at his work and created organic shapes with paint.  We learned about tinting (adding white to a color) and shading (adding black to a color).  This project took a while to make, but it was worth the work!
